Session 1: Overview of the Common Core English/Language Arts Standards
The new ELA Standards provide a common understanding of what students should know and be able to do at each grade level, and are designed to promote college and career readiness skills. The CORE standards have many implications for changes in literacy curriculum and instruction at the K-5 levels. This session is designed to provide an overview of the Reading and Language Arts Standards, while developing understanding of common themes and the types of skill development at each grade level in a spiral curriculum. Also included will be ideas on how to proceed with review and implementation of the standards in your own district.
Session 2: Everyday Math and the Common Core Standards
Included in the overview of the common core standards in the area of math, participants will learn how to read the standards, begin to unpack their own grade level standards, recognize which standards are already addressed with current curriculum and instruction, and learn several games that reinforce common core concepts. Participants will also share some current practices that will continue to be effective as we begin to embed common core standard identification into instruction.
Session 3: Science Standards - Where are we?
1. The Wisconsin Science Standards (historical perspective)
2. Look at the Science Framework/Blueprint Developed
3. Next Generation Science Standards
( FREE resources will be provided)
Session 4: Using Technology in the Classroom with an Emphasis on Math & Literacy
1. Explore a variety of resources online that will engage and motivate students.
2. Personalize student learning through the use of classroom centers.
3. Explore free or almost free online resources to use in centers to ensure students
practice the concepts required by state standards.
4. Find out new ways to use software.
With the information you gain from this presentation, participants will be ready to incorporate new ways of teaching immediately.
